The one-year-old's solo portraits

We begin with the youngest. At Milk + Lily, a first-birthday studio session almost always opens with the baby by themselves on the seamless cream backdrop, before the older sibling steps in. It gives the youngest child a moment to settle into the light, to feel the room, and to give us the honest small expressions that come from a one-year-old who has not yet been asked to smile on cue. Our one-year-old subject arrived in a soft pink tulle dress with a rose applique at the bust, paired with a fresh floral crown of pink and cream peonies. The wardrobe is deliberate: neutral studio backdrop, one saturated but soft color on the child, no busy prints. It photographs well from every angle and it lets the child be the center of every frame.

Sibling portraits, the heart of the session

The second stretch of the session is why families with two children book with us. Once the youngest is comfortable on the backdrop, the older sibling steps in, quietly, without fanfare, and we begin sibling portraits. The older brother in the Birla family, roughly five years old, arrived in a soft cream crewneck sweater and white pants: neutral, tonal, and nothing that pulls attention from the connection between the two children. What we photograph next is what parents most want and least often manage to capture themselves, a big brother placing his little sister on his lap, a hand on her back, a kiss to the top of her head. These are the images that end up framed in the hallway for the next twenty years.

The older brother, on his own

Between the sibling frames and the family portraits, we always give the older child a set of solo frames of their own. It is easy for the older sibling to feel like scenery at a first-birthday session, and we protect against that in the studio order. In these frames, the older brother sits cross-legged on the cream backdrop, alone with the camera, in the same cream-and-white wardrobe that will carry through the rest of the session. Parents leave with a portrait of their five-year-old, not just a portrait of the sibling of the birthday girl.

By this point in the session the birthday girl has warmed up enough for standing portraits, which is often the highlight for parents of a one-year-old. At twelve months, standing is a new posture, a few brave seconds at a time, hands out for balance. We shoot in bursts, low to the ground and eye-level with the child, so the frames feel like a portrait rather than a photograph taken from above. It is a small technical thing, but it is why these standing frames feel like a first-year milestone rather than a snapshot.
